Actually even a draw was enough for the Yellow-Blues to reach their goal, but Andriy Shevchenko’s men started the game quite aggressively and scored the early opener 6 minutes into the match. FC Dynamo Kyiv trainee Roman Yaremchuk, who features for KAA Gent, hit the target.
27 minutes into the game Ukraine doubled the score. Dynamo player Vitaliy Mykolenko (7th cap) put a great low cross from the left side and Yarmolenko netted the ball. Another Kyivan to take the field was Olexandr Karavayev (24th cap).
72 minutes into the match referee sent Stepanenko off for the second booking and awarded penalty for Portugal. Ronaldo made in 2:1 and thus scored the 700th goal in his career!
Still it was the only goal of the game for visitors. So, this is the first time Ukraine qualified for the European Championship directly. In 2012 our team avoided qualification as hosts and in 2016 had to go through play-offs.
