He performed under three outstanding coaches: Viktor Maslov, Olexandr Sevydov and Valeriy Lobanovskyi. Matvienko is fourfold Soviet Top League winner and threefold runner-up. Besides he was Euro-1972 finalist and won Olympic bronze in 1976 with USSR national team.
- How did you find your self in Kyiv?
- I don’t know whose decision it was, but in 1967 I started featuring for Dynamo reserve team under Mykhailo Koman. Later I played for FC Avanhard Zhovti Vody to gain experience.
- Do you remember your first appearance for Dynamo?
- Sure, it was home match against FC Spartak Moscow. We lost the game 0:1, but I became first team regular. In spring of that year Vikror Maslov was fired. Anyway I think he was a unique coach.
- What can you say about modern football?
- Football has become more intensive. There’s a lot of scrimmage.
