Dynamo Kyiv: form Demianenko till Blokhin

Anatoliy Demianenko started 2006/07 season as Dynamo head coach. At that time he must have had no idea that 6 seasons later he would try to defeat White and Blues.

Let’s recall Dynamo history starting with the period when Demianenko was Kyivans’ head coach.

Home hat trick

Having come back from World Cup-2006 Dynamo international players started the new season very confidently. White and Blues won the Ukrainian Premier League without a single loss!

That season Kyivans also won the Ukrainian Cup and Super Cup.

As for the UEFA Champions League – Dynamo were much less successful in that competition. Our team didn’t manage to qualify to round of 16 with only 2 points.

The following year Demianenko left Dynamo. His successor was Yozhef Sabo. It was the fifth time he became the head coach of Dynamo. Still after a short period Oleh Luzhnyi substituted him. White and Blues improved their position in Ukrainian Premier League but were defeated in all 6 games of UEFA Champions League group stage.

Yuri Semin: from Kyiv to Moscow

On December 8, 2007 Yuri Semin became the new head coach of Dynamo.

In 2007/08 season Kyivans became runner-ups in Ukrainian Premier League. White and Blues were also defeated by FC Shakhtar Donetsk both in Ukrainian Cup and Super Cup.

But the following season was one of the most successful for Dynamo in their contemporary history. Our team won the Ukrainian Premier League very confidently and achieved the UEFA Cup semi-finals.

Stern coach with mustache

In summer of 2009 Semin left Dynamo. Valeryi Gazzaev became the new head coach.

The only trophy Gazzaev won with Dynamo was the Ukrainian Super Cup. Still some players he invited to Kyiv managed to prove they could enforce our team. Besides he gave a chance to young Ukrainians to show their best. As a result Yevhen Khacheridi and Andriy Yarmolenko became first team regulars.

After 2:0 defeat from FC Sheriff Tiraspol Gazzaev resigned. Just as in 2007 Oleh Luzhnyi became the acting head coach. He managed to lead Dynamo through Europa League group stage.

Semin's second coming

On January 1, 2011 Juri Semin Came Back to Dynamo Kyiv.

First of all he tried to improve his euro cup record with White and Blues. But in Europa League round of 8 Kyivans were outplayed by SC Braga.

Dynamo also lost Ukrainian Cup final against Shakhtar Donetsk. Still Kyivans won the Ukrainian Super Cup.

Semin insisted on signing Dudu, Lukman Haruna and Brown Ideye. Besides Olexandr Aliyev came back from FC Lokomotiv Moscow.

Euro-2012 consequences

2011/12 season failures were forgotten quickly as Ukrainians were looking forward to Euro-2012.

9 Dynamo’s Ukrainians were on players’ list of Ukraine national team. Ognjen Vukojevic played for Croatia.

After the European contest Kyivans signed Miguel Veloso, Niko Kranjcar, Raffael, Marco Ruben and Taye Taiwo. The main loss for our team was Andriy Shevchenko’s decision to finish his career.

In September 2012 Dynamo lost 4:1 against PSG in UEFA Champions League and then against Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukrainian Premier League with the same score.

After that Semin was resigned.

Dynamo president Ihor Surkis appointed the new head coach – legendary Oleh Blokhin.
