History

FC Girondins de Bordeaux was found on October 1, 1881. In 1949 Bordeaux won their first domestic league. But their next triumph happened 40 years later…

In 1984 Girondins won Ligue 1 again. In general in 1980s FC Girondins de Bordeaux won the national league 3 times (1984, 1985, 1987), Coupe de France (1986, 1987) and Trophée des champions (1986).

But in 1990s FC Girondins de Bordeaux relegated as some financial problems occurred. Still one year later Girondins promoted again. The most important trophy of that period for the French side was UEFA Intertoto Cup-1995. The same year they were defeated by FC Bayern München in the UEFA Cup final. Despite that failure FC Girondins de Bordeaux won Ligue 1 again in 1999 and Coupe de France in 2002.

In 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons Girondins finished 6th, 7th and 5th respectively.

Head coach

FC Girondins de Bordeaux signed 53-yer-old coach Francis Gillot in 2011. During his career Gillot played for RC Lens (1982-1988, 1989-1993; 289 appearances, 17 goals), Valenciennes FC, RC Strasbourg, FC Mulhouse and FC Montauban.

In 2005 he started working as a coach in RC Lens and in 2004/05 his team finished 7th in Ligue 1. In general Lens played 92 Ligue 1 matches (+37=33-22) and 18 UEFA Cup matches (+8=5-5) under Gillot’s leadership.

From 2008 till 2011 Francis Gillot worked with FC Sochaux-Montbéliard (141 match; +48=34-59).

Current position

At the moment FC Girondins de Bordeaux are 7th in Ligue 1 table (+9=11-4).

During this winter transfer window they signed right back Julien Faubert and right winger Diego Rolan.

The skipper of the team Jaroslav Plasil is a true leader on the pitch. This season he made 33 appearances.

Polish target-man Ludovic Obraniak made 26 appearances (6 goals, 6 assists).

Another key person of Gillot’s men is goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso (32 matches in 2012/13 season, 25 goals conceded).

In general 18 players have a chance to take the field against Dynamo Kyiv on February 14. They are:

Goalkeepers: Carrasso, Keita;

Defenders: Marange, Sane, Henrique, Poundje, Planus, Tremoulinas, Faubert;

Midfielders: Plasil, Saivet, Sertic, Andre Poko, Ben Khalfallah, Obraniak;

Strikers: Bellion, Maurice-Belay, Rolan.
