After the drawing many said it would be difficult for the White-Blues to outplay the team that had several 1974 World Cup triumphants in the squad. Still after the first leg it became clear that foreign specialists just didn’t know what club Eintracht would oppose…

Good speed – best weapon!

When journalist asked about Dynamo tactical scheme at the press conference Oleh Bazylevych answered: “You’ve seen Dynamo away game model. In Kyiv same players will perform differently”.

How exactly did Kyivans feature in Frankfurt? They had dense defense and used long balls counting on Oleh Blokhin’s speed. Sometimes Matvienko, Kolotov and Veremeev also rushed forward.

At first home side defenders didn’t let Blokhin obtain the ball, but eventually they got exhausted and just followed him eluding them like cones.

Great speed is the main weapon that let Dynamo defeat their opponent away. Their fast counterattacks often puzzled Eintracht performers. Early in the second half Kolotov hit the post.

What about Dynamo defense? Of course first of all they were focused on two World Cup winners – Grabowski and Hölzenbein, but two minutes into the match let Nickel score from 20-meter distance.

After that it took goalkeeper Rudakov some time to come around and he made some mistakes. Germans felt that and tried to disturb his equanimity.

Later referee awarded penalty for Eintracht as Maslov fouled against Rorbach inside the box and Kerbel converted from the spot.

The start of the game was a success for home side, but Onyshchenko’s goal brought them down. Eintracht controlled the ball, but couldn’t cope with Dynamo defense.

The game wasn’t rough, but Kyivans still got four bookings. Three of them were doubtful.

Maturity time

Three days later cloudy weather in Kyiv bothered fans. Valeriy Lobanovskyi and Oleh Bazylevych didn’t overestimate the win in Frankfurt.

On the match day the sky suddenly became clear and supporters rushed to box offices.

Before the game Dynamo former coach Viktor Maslov stated: “Nine years ago we made our debut in European contests being in good conditions. People expected significant achievements from us, but these are special tournaments. To succeed in them one must be mature. I think today Kyivans are. I’m sure that everything will be fine”.

Right after the whistle Dynamo started their attack. Matvienko obtained the ball on the left flank, unleashed the shot, goalkeeper didn’t clear it properly and Onyshchenko hit the target. It took the White-Blues 52 seconds to do that.

Kyivans dominated and didn’t give their opponent a single second to take a breath. 39 minutes into the match Veremeev took a corner, Kolotov was the first to touch the ball after which Onyshchenko made the score – 2:0.

Our team had great desire to win and confidence. Maslov was right: it takes maturity to play like that.
