FC Lviv was founded in May 2006. The club entered the Ukrainian first division (Persha Liha) as a replacement for bankrupt club FC Hazovyk-Skala Stryi, which also represented Lviv region. In 2007-08 season the West Ukrainian side finished 2nd in the Persha Liha and were promoted to the Vyshcha Liha for the first time in their existence.
Dynamo Kyiv and FC Lviv have met only once before, with the capital side winning 1-0 at home in the Ukrainian Premier League Week 14 match on 9 November 2008. The sole goal of the match was scored by Dynamo defender Badr El Kaddouri.
