In their final match of the season and with the championship already secured, the capital side hosted arch-rivals FC Shakhtar Donetks on Tuesday and finished the 2008/2009 Ukrainian Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win. This one-goal victory over the Miners marked Dynamo’s last game under Russian coach Yuriy Semin, with his replacement Valeriy Gazzaev starting work with Ukrainian title holders on 20 June.
The White-Blues could have taken the lead inside the opening minutes as Oleksandr Aliyev and Tiberiu Ghioane both had presentable chances to score but missed the target. After a brief lull, Yuriy Semin’s men raised the tempo with Aliyev coming close again, but his dangerous left-foot strike was parried by Shakhtar goalie, and a 22-metre free-kick struck the crossbar.
The game had seemed destined to end in goalless draw as both sides showed little of the attacking verve in the second half. However, a 79th-minute kick by Dynamo striker Artem Milevskyy proved enough to settle the outcome and earn the hosts their final win of the 2008/2009 Ukrainian Premier League campaign.
